about
The Axe Axis brings into focus every area of jazz music that Jason is and continues to be inspired by including modal jazz, swing, latin jazz and latin music, and more! The record features Jason Keiser in solo guitar arrangements of 3 tunes, and features special guests jazz guitarists Rick Vandivier & John Stowell on 9 other compositions and tunes.
"Parrot On My Shoulder" was an impromptu, purposefully improvised piece and duet musical conversation between Jason Keiser and special guest, John Stowell. John brought his fretless Baritone electric guitar to the studio, and we both thought this would be a blast to try out over an open sort-of-tune, with no form, changes, melody, etc. Everything you hear in this piece was created, in the moment, as jazz does, and cannot be replicated. What you hear is the end of Jason and John's first recording session together; intertwining and speaking to and with one another almost as one musical entity.
I asked John, "hey, what should we call this?" After John had been playing with my colleague and engineer Steve's parrot Max, he said; "why don't we call it, "Parrot On My Shoulder". The title stuck, I loved it!
